Warded Shields
Smithing's answer to Tailoring's Cloaks. Crafting any Smithing gear (weapons, shields, armour) has a small chance to also give you an Aegis Core of that tier. Five Cores plus the bars a chest takes forge a Warded Shield: that tier's normal shield DEF, plus 2 of 6 bonus stats rolled at random. Every number on this page comes from the game data.
Aegis Cores
Same odds as Silkbind Thread: up to 2% per craft, higher for pieces that cost more bars (a chest or shield rolls better than gloves), and multiplied by your Item Find.
Short on Cores at a higher tier? Upgrade Aegis Core turns 3 Cores and 1 Upgrade Orb of a tier into 1 Core of the next tier.
Example: Graviton Aegis Core. Forging a Graviton Warded Shield takes 5 of them plus the bars a Graviton chest takes.
The 6 bonus stats
Each shield rolls 2 different stats (15 possible pairs per tier). Each one is worth about half the tier. The first stat names the prefix and the second the suffix, e.g. Emberward Graviton Barrier of Fortune.

DEF stacks on top of the shield's normal DEF. From Tier 21 up every smithed shield also carries a little resist for its zone's element, and a matching resist roll adds to it.
Upgrading
Warded Shields upgrade like any smithed shield: the same Upgrade Orbs, the same +1 to +4 risk, and each level adds 25% to DEF and to both rolled stats (at least +1 per level). Upgraded ones also count toward your Smithing set's per-piece upgrade bonus.
